The Implications of the Cobe-dmr Results for Cosmic Strings

چکیده
We compare the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation measured by the COBE experiment to the predictions of cosmic strings. We use an analytic model for the ∆T/T power spectrum that is based on our previous numerical simulations to show that the COBE results imply a value for the string mass per unit length, μ under the assumption that cosmic strings are the source of the measured anisotropy. We find Gμ = 1.5± 0.5× 10−6 which is consistent with the value of μ thought to be required for cosmic strings to seed galaxy formation. Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Cosmic strings confront COBE
We investigate large-angle anisotropies in the cosmic microwave radiation background which are induced by cosmic strings. We numerically evolve a string network from a redshift Z=100 to the present day and we use this data to generate a full-sky temperature map using sophisticated Green's function methods. Based on a limited number of realizations, we have compared the results of our simulation...
متن کاملCosmic microwave background probes models of inflation.
Inflation creates both scalar (density) and tensor (gravity wave) metric perturbations. We find that the tensor mode contribution to the CMB anisotropy on large-angular scales can only exceed that of the scalar mode in models where the spectrum of perturbations deviates significantly from scale invariance (e.g., extended and power-law inflation models and extreme versions of chaotic inflation)....
متن کاملRadiation Anisotropy Induced by Cosmic Strings 12
We report on a current investigation of the anisotropy pattern induced by cosmic strings on the cosmic microwave background radiation (MBR). We have numerically evolved a network of cosmic strings from a redshift of Z = 100 to the present and calculated the anisotropies which they induce. Based on a limited number of realizations, we have compared the results of our simulations with the observa...
متن کاملCOBE Observations and Results
This paper summarizes the results from the COBE satellite mission. Nine years have passed since the launch of COBE and six years since the announcement of the discovery of cosmic microwave background anisotropies by the COBE DMR instrument. This is still a relatively short time to look back and understand the implications of COBE and the anisotropy discovery; however, this 3K Cosmology Conferen...
متن کاملPower Spectrum of Primordial Inhomogeneity Determined from the 4 - Year COBE 1 DMR Sky Maps
Fourier analysis and power spectrum estimation of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy on an incompletely sampled sky developed by Górski (1994) has been applied to the high-latitude portion of the 4-year COBE DMR 31.5, 53 and 90 GHz sky maps. Likelihood analysis using newly constructed Galaxy cuts (extended beyond |b| = 20 deg to excise the known foreground emission) and simultaneously c...
